Boy learned to drive from video games before stealing family car

By Danielle Demetriou

A nine-year-old Japanese schoolboy who learnt how to drive from playing video games has used his motoring skills to steal the family car and set off on a 1.8 mile journey to visit his grandmother.

Police were alerted to the young boy’s antics by reports from members of the public that a car without a driver was moving down a street in the city of Ogaki in central Japan.

When he was stopped by police, the schoolboy told officers: “I learned from playing video games at arcades and watching my father drive.”

The adventure began when the boy, who has not been named, decided to take the family car from the front of his home, where it was parked with the keys in the ignition, in order to visit his grandmother.

But soon after he set off on the 7.5 mile journey he became lost. After 1.8 miles the boy pulled into a convenience store car park in order to ask staff for directions.

When members of the public called police to claim that a car was being driven without a driver, officers found the vehicle neatly backed into the convenience store car park.

After being found by the police, the boy reportedly told officers: “I’m sorry. I just wanted to go to my grandmother’s house.” A police spokesman added: “The boy is interested in driving because of video games. He drove the car out of his adventurous mind.”

Another “blame it on the games”.

That isn’t the case here so much as the kid KNEW how from the games he played, and just wanted to go see his grandma. Wasn’t that sweet?
