A Look Back at the Greatest DS Puzzlers - Day One

Posted: June 20, 2008 by Beebles

For the next couple of Fridays we’ll be taking a look at what has arguably been the Nintendo DS’s strongest genre. Everything from the most notable, to the honorable mentions will be included. You’d wonder why Nintendo doesn’t pump out quality first person shooters like this!

Day One- Meteos

With games like Polarium, Puyo Pop, and Zoo Keeper being released right around the launch of the Nintendo DS back in 2004, it would seem that Nintendo’s newest handheld system was built specifically for puzzle games. It wasn’t until Meteos was released by Q Entertainment that the puzzle genre really started to heat up for the DS. Meteos was actually one of the first DS titles to get high reception from critics, and it definitely deserved the praise it received. It had superb presentation, music, graphics, and most importantly gameplay. The use of the touch screen made for a unique experience that you could only get on your DS. That experience was rare back in the DS game drought, not to mention having a DS game with a quirky story and seemingly orchestrated music. Meteos had it’s share of flaws, like being able to scribble the touch screen randomly when things got chaotic. It almost felt like a way to cheat the game. Although Meteos also had it’s flaws, it set a very solid bar for numerous future DS puzzlers to come. Also, not many people know that the famed Masahiro Sakurai (maker of the Kirby and Smash Brothers series) worked on designing this game!
