The absolute NUMBER ONE reason that I beat the crap out of nearly everyone I encounter is because I PREDICT THEIR MOVEMENTS. Maybe you're just insanely predictable so people know where to go before you even know yourself. Also, try working on reaction time.
Another thing is, let's say for Ike, he's an insanely slow character. But whenever I use him, I constantly use his Triple A tap combo, because it's quick and effectively knocks the enemy someone. You MUST learn to utilize the EVERY move of your character to your advantage. Learn to manipulate the matches into your favor. Take it form someone who's been playing the Super Smash Brothers series for a good 9 years, since it first came out.

Thanx I'm trying to master one character at a time and predict movements like you said also I switched to my GC controller and that seems to be helping too. BTW do they sell wavebird controllers anymore?

Don't buy a Wavebird. If you want 100% response time to the game from the controller, direct cable connection is your best bet.

I do not own Brawl, but I have a good friend who does. It's a little shameful that I'm better than him at a game I don't even own

Here's a few things that I'm trying to do to get better and may help you
1. When you fall, hold down so you fall faster
2. Right before you hit the ground use dodge so you get right back on your feet
3. When you're falling, fall the opposite way of the opponent. Grabbing on to the ledge after a fall helps me.
I hope i helped a little

Ah yes, Quick Recovery, as I like to call it. It also works if you're being rebounded off of walls uncontrollably.
Also, try and link wall jumping into some of your attacks, and if you're playing with items, make good use of being able to grab items in mid air.
