If you are wondering whether mobile games will ever trump the rest of the portable game market, you can look to Japan. In Japan, mobile phone games are extremely popular and a lucrative industry (they are seriously like a decade ahead of us). Even so, the DS is still more popular there (per capita) than in the United States.
In the US, mobile companies take a large cut of the profit from mobile games. In Japan the game developers see a much better share of the profit. Therefore the market for mobile games in the US is much smaller and less lucrative, which is discouraging to game developers. It is unlikely that the mobile game market will be overtaking the rest of the portable game market anytime soon.
