My First Day of University

After waiting nearly a half-hour, my bus finally arrived (yes, I'm forced to take the bus everyday due to lack of driver's license) and I hopped on. There was this and then that, and then I was at CBU (Cape Breton University), my university.

What did I do first? Why, I headed for the library, of course -- what did you think I would do, socialize with people -- people I don't even know? Imagine that. No, I immediately headed toward the library in an attempt to drown myself in a good collection of books until my first class started. However, to my dismay, I quickly discovered that the library was not open until 8:30am. It was only around 7:50 at the latest.

So, instead, I decided to sit on a random bench near the library and look over both my school and bus schedule -- several times, actually; anything to keep me from staring into the distance stupidly. This became boring, as you can imagine.

So I then went to venture about the complex with no real direction, although perhaps to locate my first classroom for later reference. I failed. On my way back, I bumped into a friend. We chatted very briefly before I joined him in room-searching. We eventually went our separate ways with no success.

I returned to the bench, frequently observing the maps of the complex next to me, again, to keep me occupied.

Eventually, I found the correct path to take, and once I did, finding my classrooms became rather simple.

Walking into my first class, History, I found two women and no one else. I sat down and kept to myself, of course, probably looking over the same stuff again. After a few minutes of boredom and inactivity, the women left the room. Shortly after, they returned to inform me that the class had been moved. I followed them and entered the new room, which was rather filled.

Sitting down in some odd type of pull-out chair, I received an outline of the course from the professor. She seemed nice enough -- sometimes pausing in the middle of a sentence -- but nice. This is History 100, an introduction course. We'll be covering such topics as the origins and major developments in Western civilization, the maltreatment of women throughout history, the Black Death and its effects, religion in the Middle Ages, etc. This being the first day, all we were give was the aforementioned handout and a very brief speech. Oh, and, amazingly, I don't require any books for this class, as all textual information will be presented to us.

Leaving, and having about an hour and a half to kill, I went to check on the library's status. It was open and I was joyed. I immediately took a seat and set my things down before moving to the front shelves. The first book I noticed and took a look at was some sort of encyclopedia of mythological beings (I forget its title). I sat back down, read a few pages, and returned it. If memory serves me correctly, I then noticed a rather tall and fairly thick book by the name of "The Encyclopedia of Imaginary Places," to which I couldn't resist grabbing. I love that sort of stuff, don't you know? The book looked very promising and I did read a few pages, but I guess I wasn't in the mood for it because I also returned it shortly after. Looking for something else, I spotted a series of books called "The World of Science," the first of which focused on humans, and that's what I chose to read for the remainder of my time. Throughout all of this, I repeatedly tried to catch glimpses of the clock behind the librarian's desk. It was hard to see without getting right up to the desk. They really needed more clocks in there.

I found my next class with relative ease. It was Political Science. Greeting me at the door was another friend of mine from high school who looked somewhat happy to see me. We sat next to each other near the door while I few others seated themselves, as well. We chatted a bit about our schedules and whatnot until our teacher finally arrived. He looked like a man committed to his work and getting things done. He also looked like a nerdy adult. We received a pretty in-depth outline from him, he went over it, etc. I will need to buy a book for this course. Oh well. It's also an introductory course, so we'll be covering the basics such as:

-What is government?
-What is law?
-What is sovereignty?

Etc. You don't need me to tell you that, though; it's basic stuff. Anyway, to our surprise, he threw us an assignment with a date. Now, the date is October 7th, but still; it's a little disappointing. The assignment is to describe your political ideologies and why you have them. Big question, huh? Yeah, I thought so, too. He explained his realization that most of us probably didn't think it out very hard, but also that that was the point of the project, so it's not too big of a deal, but still annoying to have to do.

After he finished up, I had another hour to kill. Guess where I went.

At the library, I looked around again, but ended up returning to the same World of Science book and continued reading. That's basically all I did during that hour break. Pretty good book.

In Psychology, I found yet another friend, but he didn't sit next to me, not that I blame him; it was a bit crowded where I was. I don't generally like sitting next to strangers, but I had no choice here; after the room stopped filling, it was bloated -- by far my largest classroom; there was hardly a seat left. I have no idea why Psychology 100 is apparently so popular. Maybe it's because they heard the teacher is so awesome, which he is. How? Well, as he told us, he only uses multiple choice for test evaluations since he believes it's the most accurate way, he has a decent sense of humor, he seems to love his job or at least like it, and he defended the scientific aspect of Psychology, which many believe is non-existent -- the people I've talked to, anyway. It always annoyed me and it was nice to see him confront it and make us confront it throughout the course. This was also my longest course of the day, taking up almost the full period. The guy likes to talk, I suppose, which I don't mind. Again, I shouldn't really have to explain the kind of stuff that will be covered within this course.

It being around 1:50pm, and my bus being due at 2:30pm, I decided to walk around the entire university (as in, outside). After that, I settled into what I took for a bus stop (nowhere to sit, though). It wasn't. You see, my university has two structures that look exactly like bus stops, but in fact, are not at all. If I hadn't of walked around the university again, I would have missed the bus. I ended up catching it just in time, thankfully.

I went home and tried to forget about how sore my legs were from the constant walking.

So yeah, there you go. This writing was mainly self-serving; I typed it for myself in order to look back on it and remember my first day of university. I was bored; don't blame me for wasting your time.

Today was pretty awesome, Hollow, aside from me constantly searching for where to buy a bus pass, which I didn't find. I could, and just might, write a blog on how awesome and weird my Anthro/Soc teacher is.

What the hell is a DL?

Too lazy and getting it while in university would be suicide. I'm waiting until the summer for that. Also, I'm 18.

Another also, I'm not exactly loaded with money, so it isn't quite as easy as, "Get a car, dude." Silly Koopa.

Pfft, forget that. I'll get one when I can. I'm in no hurry. Besides, my brother plans on giving me his old one, anyway.
