Situs inversus + other doctorly tidbits

Posted 07-15-2009 at 09:44 PM by cornyjohn
I helped out our local doctor today (and I will be tomorrow, as well) with his rounds in the clinic. Today was mostly a learning day... Making sure I can read blood pressures right, taking an accurate history, that type deal.

You should probably know this doctor is a jokester and he enjoys having fun in the clinic, so he sent me in to practice examining a 76 year old female patient (of whose name I'm legally bound not to reveal), check her BP, and take a quick history. He already knew that information but needed me to do it to see if I was competent.

BP was normal, I did a thorough history, but when I went popped in my stethoscope (did I mention I got one of those?) to check her heart and breathing, I was shocked. On the left side of her chest, I couldn't find her heart. Embarrassing, really, when you consider it makes a pretty unmistakable sound.

I tell her I need to consult the doctor a minute and go out. I explain my findings, and he looks at me really seriously and says something like, "That could be serious." and runs into the room to check her himself. I follow.

He pulls out a stethoscope and listens for a moment, looks up, and shakes his head as if to say, "Nope, not there." He then checked the right side... And bid me to do the same.

Back goes the stethoscope... Bu-bump. Bu-bump. I'm seriously WTFing right about then and he says two words in Latin--situs inversus--and told me to Bing it (doesn't sound as catchy as "Google it", but hooray, Microsoft!).

Anyway, she has a condition that literally means "reversed site". What this means is all of her internal organs are exactly opposite of what side they should be on. It's caused by a birth defect when the embryo is about 7 days old.

He knew that's what I'd do the whole time--freak.

I also took a look at a drunk patient with rectal bleeding and another man who passed out every time he had a coughing fit. This, my friends, is my life's calling. It's been the best day I could have... Even better than having sex.

Ooh, did you guys see what I did there? I put something above man's natural craving for a mate. Hombre is gonna kill me.

MotionPlus first impressions

I just got back from a friend's house who just bought Tiger Wood's PGA Tour '10 that comes bundled with MotionPlus.

I should probably wait to play a decent game with MP, but that's why I said first impressions.

Just fiddling around with the way the Wiimote registers movements, you do notice that twisting the Wiimote is much more precise and that leads to pretty accurate hooks and slices when you swing the club, as well as being much easier to swing at lower speeds. Wii Sports golf, I noticed, is virtually impossible to hit 100% power without slicing the ball awfully, but with MP, I was able to keep the club head straight and accurately place my ball.

There was also a disc golf mode, which I tried out and it also felt surprisingly natural, allowing you to put spins and such on the disc by rolling your wrist mid swing.

What would convince me this is worth it would be a decent game with some swordfighting, but for right now, I'm not too impressed. Although it did allow for some advanced mechanics in my golf game, it didn't really change the way the game felt somewhat unrealistic (from Wii Sports).

Time will tell, though.

Facial trauma + Dreamcast = FUN?

Posted 07-05-2009 at 01:11 PM by cornyjohn
So, my weekend at the lake sucked, for the most part.

I front flipped off the kneeboard (kind of like a surfboard but you ride on your knees behind a boat) and smashed my mouth and nose. I probably needed a few stitches but it wasn't anything a little tape and superglue couldn't fix. My mouth is swollen and it's hard to talk or eat, so I pulled out the Dreamcast I had stored in the closet there.

It hasn't worked for months, and I had no idea why. I had this hunch that the laser wasn't reading correctly because if I pulled it all the way back, the disc would read correctly every time. So I cracked the case and unplugged the ribbon cord, pulled the laser into its standard position, and put the cord back in, resetting it.

It works better than ever now.

Just a reminder

It would be a lot easier if I had a place to advertise this besides Wiispace, but I don't, so here goes:

YouTube - Hero of Time Soundtrack Montage

Here's the official soundtrack for BMB Finishes' new movie, The Hero of Time. You probably know I'm excited ****less (if that's possible) about the fanfilm. What you may not know is it releases the day after tomorrow (June 6th, 2009) in Atlanta, Georgia. Admission is free, and for specific details, you can check out The Hero Of Time.

There are talks about a DVD release (and therefore a torrent, since BMB can't legally profit from this anyway).

Have a nice day.

Summer courses

Posted 05-21-2009 at 12:03 PM by cornyjohn

With school almost over, I need something useful to do with my time. I've been looking into maybe some summer pre-med courses, but I'd have to enroll in a college and that's out of the question at the moment.

Would it be entirely impossible to find a free course that I could use to teach myself and get a heads-up before moving on to college after next year? Even a course syllabus I could use to research related topics on my own would be helpful.
