Square Enix president explains "Wii is a toy" comment

Square Enix is most well known for its amazing bestselling RPG game series, Final Fantasy. Many times, the company's support can make or break a system. Because of this, people will wonder just how seriously the company's president is taking the Nintendo Wii console when he calls it a "toy."





In a recent interview with a popular UK site, Yoichi Wada-san, president of Square Enix, spoke very openly about how his recent comments in an interview with CNET Japan had been taken too far out of what he meant. Here is some of his explaination:

“That particular article interpreted what I said in a rather coarse way. To fill in the context, with this generation of consoles, people take it for granted that all of them should be and are multi-functional. So it is each manufacturer’s responsibility to communicate with potential customers, and let them know which of them would make the best use of which function in each console.
In that context, Nintendo seems to place a great emphasis on Wii Sports and Fit rather than Zelda, a role-playing game. In my opinion, if they expose the functions in this way, they are making the Wii look like a toy. With Playstation 3, Sony are not appealing to consumers with strong messages that say this kind of user can make use of PS3 in this particular way for this particular kind of fun. That, they are quite weak at.”
Should Wii gamers stand by their computers waiting for the announcement of a Wii RPG from Sqare Enix?
We will have to just wait and see.

NO! Square won't be putting anything on the wii....I guess I'll have to stick to playing the titles they make for DS and 360.

This doesn't mean they WON'T be putting any titles on the Wii, it just means nor many if any

Wait until the wii gets income/feedback from brawl and mario kart wii.
These games will proove its not a toy and hopefully make him change is mind.

because melee and double dash did so much for the GC I think we just have to get used to the fact a lot of companies don't like Nintendo's guide lines.

Yeah basically they regard it as a kiddie console that only plays novelty games such as Wii Sports and Fit... And let's face it, there are a lot of those out there for the Wii. Just wait 'till Brawl comes out... He'll see. It's why I bought my Wii--not for those Wii Sports clones, but for those REAL games.

PS3 < Wii. End of story.

The Wii have a lot of games that aren't big games,but this year, the real games will come out.These games will show what the Wii can do and I guess more people will be interested in making games for the wii. Who couldn't see that games like Brawl, Mario Kart, ToS2, Sega SuperStar Tennis,ect..
