Pokémon Discussion : Strategies, Teams, Trades, Etc.
Mod, sticky plz
![]() just noticed that gamebattles FINALLY got around to combining heartgold/soulsilver with diamond/pearl/plat on their competitive ladder. the only reason i bought pokemon in the first place was to battle online, and now that i sold my ds and miss it dearly, i plan on getting another one soon along with pokemon. dunno why, but this is just one of the games i cant put down from my childhood. so, let's discuss some **** about the game, such as battling, team preferences, types you prefer, etc.

I'm a bit competitive, but I also have random teams that I made from low tier Pokemon. They are still EV trained though.
As for preferences on teams, I like to do half and half on physical and special attackers, though I lean more towards physical sometimes or a Pokemon that can do both.

Its a horrific and boring process that takes a million years. The long story short is that every pokemon has an invisible stat called "Effort Values". They gain a few points toward these effort values every time they kill certiain pokemon, usually ones who have those stats highest. For example, killing a tangela, which has high defense, will yield high defense effort values. Gaining effort values in a given stat will increase the amount of points you gain in that stat when you level. So, if you want a Dusclops with high defense to be a good wall pokemon, you would take your dusclops and kill a freak-ton of tangelas until it gains enough defense effort values. Now, there is a limit to how many total effort value points a pokemon can recieve, and how many of those points can go into one stat. I don't remember the exact numbers, but if I recall correctly, effort values permit a boost of up to 32 in both of two stats at level 50 or something like that. Protein, Zinc, Iron, Carbos etc all actually work by giving a pokemon 10 effort values into that stat, but the number that can be put into one stat this way is only 100 points, leaving 155 left to earn by grinding (only 255 effort points can go into one stat, but you can have a total of twice this many, to distribute between two or more stats). You can find a more detailed explanation if you go to serebii.net and read their EV training FAQ.
BTW: Scissor Ability: Technician Hold item: Metronome Move 1: Bullet Punch Move 2: Swords Dance Move 3: ???? Move 4: PROFIT EV trained for 50% attack, 25% Defense, 25% Special Defense.

how about types? usually, i try to keep things fresh, but i usually tend to want a team balanced around poison and defense. rhydon is usually somewhere in my lineup along with muk, but aside from that, i really just go with whatever. i'd like to get lapras thrown into the lineup somewhere, but more importantly, i think an electric pokemon is always a bonus to have in the lineup. paralysis can be critical in most battles if your poison plan doesnt work to well.

Differs for me, but I usually have at least one steel and ground type, or something with poison immune and something that can absorb electric. I always have a fire type too, cause I just love fire. My all-fire team usually does pretty good.
