As ive said before, theres quite a big Steam community here. While others ask, what is Steam? Here it is so I dont need to explain

Here you discuss HL2, your latest zombie slaughtering machine in Gmod, the airboat race course you built on the Source SDK, how many crowbar kills you made in Deathmatch, and the Headcrab costume your mom made you for Halloween. But seriously, any questions regarding Steam games, or anything else related, spit it out. And if you dont have Steam, get it. You can get Half Life Deathmatch free if you own a ATI/Nvidia graphics card. Google it. Let the thread begin!

So any way, I got Gmod 9.0.4, but it hasn't shown up in my games list. Many people, including the readme, says I need Counter Strike Source. Any way to preload it without actually buying CS:S? I want to play it so badly.

Lemme detail it for ya.

Steam is an online community made by Valve (creators of half-life) with the intent of letting people buy games off the net without having a hard copy (digital download). When it started it was just Valve games onboard, but now Sega and many other companies are placing games on Steam because it is the largest Digital Download site for PC games. Plus you save some green when you buy digitally because you don't have a hard copy. But a bonus is if you have the Hard Copy of a game that steam carries you can upload your security key onto your Steam account and it will be stored there so if you lose your hard copy you still have your Digital copy that will remain with your account untill you delete the account. It also has it's own friend layout called Steam Friends. Where you can add a players account and you can chat to them while you are both in 2 different games (similar to XFire). Also you can join one of your friends right away to the server they are playing on as well.

I just got Steam today. I own an ATI graphics card, so I got the Half-Life Deathmatch and HL:Lost Coast for free.

They are downloading as we speak.

However, I have good things to say about Steam's interface--the friends, store, etc. Like Sarge said, it's cheaper to buy games from Steam, and I like the fact that it has it's own chat.

Steam interface is so great that it would make a great operating system!

Anybody know a way to preload Counter-Strike Source? I need it for Gmod 9

steam is pretty much xfire mixed with an internet game store. its pretty cool. i might get an account later when i get gmod (hopefully, cuz i really want it. getting portal/gmod pack i think).

WAIT WAIT wait! Hold it! Before you kill yourself with confusion!

You need Steam to get Portal and Gmod, without Steam you couldnt have it. There is no Portal+Gmod pack.

And you have to have CS to have GMod.

The only way to preload CS Source is if they have a free weekend again. Other than that there is no way to preload it. Unless you have a copy of a CSS CD Key
