Should college athletes be paid?

Should college athletes be paid for playing, especially in high risk/contact sports?

It seems to me that every aspect of the team benefits except those that do the most work: the players. Coaches already have to offer incentives to complete classes, so it isn't like student athletes join a prominent school solely to study. It also seems as if some don't have the time to manage both team requirements and schoolwork.

Your opinion?

hell no...they are already being "paid" if that's what you want to call it by getting a free ride to what ever college they are going to...

plus, college is like an internship for most athletes in they will likely go to the NFL and get paid millions....

why should they get paid?

i agree with hombre...the BIG majority of college athletes have a free ride to that school anyway...so why should they get paid? sure, they fill up the stands in the stadiums, but that wouldnt be possible without the school giving them the scholarship...

i dont even think professional atheletes should get paid nearly the amount of money they currently do. big name athletes, the tony romos, the terrell owens', the shawne merrimans', the david ortiz', ALL of them are overpaid. 64 million dollars to play football for 6 years is RIDICULOUS.

Totally agree, trust me they get treated well and not just the popular sports. I got a half scholarship to run for Berry which basically meant I was getting "paid" $10,000 in tuition a year to run 70 miles a week. I got tons of free clothes and shoes, food, lodgeing and had a blast. I dident feel the need to be paid at all. As far as high risk sports go, either find an insurence plan that covers young athletes or risk it. That's why it's so important to still concentrate on your studies enough to get a degree. It's not that hard to ballance the two, you dont have to get A's in every class.

Yes, it's a little rediculous but hey that's what the demand is at. If some team wants to dish that cash out so be it. The player is not forcing them to pay that much. I do have great respect for Wayne Gretzky, he one year gave back a large portion of his salery b/c he knew he played lousey and did not earn it all. Would be very intresting to have a league based on indivdual and team achievments. Some current contracts I think have bonuses based on achievments

Hombre is right. They are already getting paid in the form of scholarships and financial aid for them to continue on in college. Another thing is that they are associated with a school team. So it would essentially be like the school paying them money. This creates two problems: one being that the school will go broke, two being that this pisses off the other students on campus.

If you wanna compare it, for us still in school who are involved in school sports below the college level; when was the last time you got paid for playing a sport. Last time I checked I don't get paid squat for playing High School football.

Let's compare football to a career.

High school football is like volunteering at the humane society to put some work on your resume.

College is like working at McDonalds.

Pro is having a lifetime career.

I don't particularly agree with paying college athletes, but I saw an article in a magazine and figured it would make interesting discussion.
