Altruism: Is it even possible?

Definition for Altruism, the highest form of selflessness, as said by Webster dictionary:
1) Unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others
2) Behavior by an animal that is not beneficial to or may be harmful to itself but that benefits others of its species

In other words, Altruism is defined as an action that yields no personal gain. It's an action without a positive consequence or reward. So the question: Is true Altruism even possible? Can any good-hearted act, no matter how sacrificial, not have any positive payback for the person that initiated the act?

No, it isn't possible. Even if you gain nothing material, you still gain the satisfaction of helping someone. And if you don't get that, someone is going to compliment your sacrifice. That is a gain in my book.

I'm gonna have to think the Machiavelli way here for a minute and say no I don't think it is possible. People inherently do things for their own self-interest at heart no matter how good their intentions may or may not be. Like corny said before if you help someone you are getting "paid back" in the sense of satisfaction of helping others.

There is only one person I believe (religiously) to be truly altruistic which I will leave out for the sake of debate.
