Gun Rights: How much should civilians get?

Thought I'd bring this up, considering all the fuss about it in recent years. How much access should we get to assault-esqe weapons? The AR-15 has been flying off shelves in the event of another AR banning, and I've met people who have AK-47's in their garage. Silencers are illegal in multiple states (if not federally, not sure) and banana magazines were just recently made legal again. Then there's fully automatic weapons, which are as easy to acquire as shaving a bold out of your AR-15 or getting a new trigger for your AK-47, but are illegal to own. So, my question to you is, how much do you think we should be allowed to own? I personally feel that there should be a civilian automatic weapons license (similar to concealed carry) that would permit people to own and operate automatic weapons. Thoughts?

Your saying emptying a drum mag out of a Thompson SMG doesn't sound like fun?

Guns cause more problems than they solve. Gun control laws are terrible ONLY because they don't solve any of the problems guns cause because the people we want to prevent from owning guns would continue to do so anyway.

That being said, I'm neutral towards civilian gun ownership. Civilian automatic weapons in America would be insane, though. Not only would it not help very much in the event of homeland crisis (we have an army for that, you know, and it would be terrible for an untrained civilian to intervene), but it could potentially make it easier to get into the hands of one of the aforementioned people whom we don't want to own guns in the first place.

Which is why a automatic weapons license would be good. Training, registered weapons to them, and traceable by law enforcement.

Imagine if we didn't have guns during the Revolutionary War. Gun laws do not solve anything as has been said previously. I know someone who went to Britain. The people told him that even though they practically banned guns the people that use guns for wrong reasons still have them. They told him not to let the government take away our guns.

Besides, if I were someone living on the border with those drug gangs. I would get as much armament as I could. Those guys have guns too so I have to be as protected as possible. They wouldn't get me without a fight, and the government isn't doing squat about the border.

I wouldn't mind if the permit was really hard to get.

@Greatheart: TBH, the drug gangs don't really cause much trouble on this side of the border. It's the coyotes that cause most of it, but in most cases they get their weapons from the drug gangs.

All that does no good if the guns get stolen, which is why I said it just makes it easier for the "bad guys" (for lack of a better term) to get hold of them. I'm not saying 100% of all guns would have this happen to them, but the possibility is there.

I can completely understand that mindset, although I personally wouldn't have the cajones to kill a man even if he was shooting at me. I don't fear dying enough to justify murder.

I agree that guns cause more problems than we solve, but changing the law won't change that fact. Banning guns through law means that lawful citizens will not have firearms but criminals and terrorists still will. While I don't see any reason for civilians to have fully automatic military grade weapons, there is certainly good cause to permit them to carry handguns, rifles, shotguns etc. Many argue that in the event of an attack like the Virginia Tech shootings, if all the victims had been in possession of guns themselves, the perpetrator would have been killed before he could attack nearly as many people. It may sound crazy, but every potential mugger, robber, or rapist is a lot less likely to pull out a gun if he knows that every mother within 10 miles is going to point theirs at him the moment he does.
