Lyle's take on religion :)

All I have to say is: I'm atheist. I do not believe there is a "higher power" entity that created us and continually watches over us. For one, he/she must be a rather sick person, watching everyone all the time; I do believe they call those people "stalkers". Two, the bible is flawed, and I'm not even going into it, because it has too many flaws... I care not if you bash me for this, or praise me; this is merely my opinion, and I will NOT answer any sort of question pertaining to my/your beliefs in this thread, unless it intrigues me. I am only giving my opinion, nothing more.

Now, while I understand some people may need a "religious fix" to feel "real" in this world, or help cope with stress in some way, that does not mean EVERYONE should share your beliefs; so KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. I have no problem with others being religious, so long as you keep it out of my life, because I simply do not believe (severe lack of proof is one factor). However, it's when people start letting religion control EVERY FACTOR OF THEIR LIFE that I start to worry about humanity, and wonder how soon we're all going to kill each other over petty reasons.... condemning others because they aren't of your religion? Being abstinent because " 'he' is watching us, and wants us to marry first" (absolute bullcrap)? Not enjoying some of life's finer qualities (such as playing great M rated games) because "he" would not approve and send you to Hell (which I hear is rather cold this time of year)? Saying homosexuals are an abomination? Seriously. Stop bull****ting around and LIVE YOUR DAMN LIFE out from under a rock. We only live once, right? Unless you believe in reincarnation. But whatever, that's your game.

Now, in no way, shape or form am I saying denounce your religion, go grab a hooker and booze, drug yourself up and party til you piss blood and die of heart failure. It is preferable, that you stop hiding behind your imaginary friend, get real friends, and actually enjoy life. I don't see how people can enjoy life when they're always running around trying to convert others, screaming and babbling in church (sound fairly possessed to me), abhorring others because they don't believe in some god(s) (which humans have MANY gods, how do you prove which is the real one, if at all?).

Before I stop here and leave the thread, letting you bash me all you want because I don't care, I will leave you with something to ponder. Feel free to discuss.

That basically sums it up. I took out the video that he originally put, mainly because it was far more anti-theist than I safely call myself (since I never call myself "anti" anything), and I like to see myself as very open-minded, so I never bash religion. Mainly because I realize I can't know everything, so everyones religious views still have a chance (no matter how microscopically small ) of being right.

So instead of his video, I thought I'd put up a more optimistic one, since that more matches my thought processes.

In fact I think I'm even more Optimistic than Sagan was in this dialogue.

I dunno if you were around when it happened, but religious debate has been banned on this forum. However, I will respond to the video.

Butt load of crap. This world tearing itself apart, and it's not getting any better. The stance I view life with is this, optimism is for those who want to be disappointed, pessimism is for those who have no faith, and realism is for those who see clearly. The facts don't like, but people and ideas do. This world is falling apart, and the only thing we can do is live life the best we can through God's love and mercy and prepare for Heaven. My beliefs, my opinion.

I don't want you to take this the wrong way, but there's a whole lot we can do to make this world a better place! We have to, because this is the only life we get. Hiding behind God isn't helping.

I say, we try to make this world a better place just in case there isn't another one after it. If there turns out to be a heaven, at least you can say you helped people.

I also think that you can be optimistic and realistic. I'm pretty sure Carl Sagan was a man that went with the facts, so you couldn't say he was pulling s**t out of his a**. I look at the facts, and it's obvious that violence has been going down a lot in recent years. It's kind of hard to tell with the media putting a magnifying glass to every little disaster, but the facts don't lie (for the most part anyway).

People like to see all of the bad things in the world, but after awhile, they close their eyes to all of the good things in it too.

Yes there is. But hey, we won't. That's about as simple as it gets, I think.

MY view on the matter is... Iwent to a catholic school all my life.. I had my confirmation, received Communion raised in a catholic family and attended church all my life...

I honestly am not sure if there is a God or not, ok let me rephrase that, I think that there is an Energy (whether it can manifest into the physical or not that I don't know) but I have had things happen that honestly required a miracle from God to happen that makes me believe in something/someone being out there (My daughter surving being one of the major things, most of you remember that whole ordeal and the pics of her)...From being told by the Dr's that the only option they can do is remove her breathing tube and hope for a miracle for her to survive the night to her being healthy and having ZERO problems today...that alone makes me believe in more then just "random luck"...

some people say if there is a God then he.she is sick for letting people die...

this is my theory on that... Keyword in that sentence is "MY theory"...I think that everyone that is born is in a "Black book" for lack of a better word that God has and in that book next to everyone's name are two dates, one is the day they are born and the other is the day they are set to die... when their death day comes they die, that's part of the free will that God gave us, I know you are going to say that Noone will willingly choose death for free will, but God also isn't going to say "well you're a ****ing idiot so you're going to die regardless"... when we are born it's kind of an accepted fact that we will all die one day, so that is where the free will comes into play...you accept you will die one day, hopefully it's when you're 90 instead of 2 but it happens... I'm not all high an dmighty and I don't try to tell everyone who walks by that God is Great or that he even exists I have my doubts sometimes like any normal person who blindly believes in something they can't see, touch, or smell...

But I'm also a realist and just like I can't "Prove" to you that thier is a God... you can't "Prove" to me that thier isn't... all I know is like I stated before, SOMETHING or SOMEONE saved my daughter's life and it wasn't a Human Dr. or a piece of machinery...so I believe in Something being out there...
