5 Reasons Why you Should own a PS3
The Couch Mercenaries - News
Quote:
I know for every pro I give you to buy a PS3, you can probably come up with a con (I predict Murphy will list them out quite nicely for me in the nearby future). But take this for what it is; the ramblings of a PS3 lover who knows that each and every one of you would be happy to own a big shiny black box of your own. So here is my 5 reasons why you (yeah you) should own a PS3. It costs a pretty penny, but it’s worth every cent. Hit the jump and journey into the dark recesses of my mind.
5) PS3 Loves PSP Yap, the PSP turned out to be a pretty lame duck. I bought a PSP a couple years back and even I, the official Sony fanboy of TCM, sold it to buy myself a DS. I had all these dreams of playing games in bed every night; I was going to use it as my new MP3 player and I would be able to kill time at work watching movies on that beautiful screen. Well, the games turned out to be [removed swear word] and far between (and the few gems had horrible load times), I found it way to bulky to be used as my everyday MP3 player and you needed to convert all movie files to watch them on the PSP, so I never bothered doing it more than
once. All that said, it ended up collecting dust in a corner for many months before I decided enough was enough and sold it (made a profit on it too.... God bless EBay).
But the times, they are a changing. Although the list of awesome games on the PSP is still not huge, games like God of War: Chains of Olympus, FFVII: Crisis Core and Patapon have given the system a new life. Sales are on the rise (especially in Japan thanks to the Monster Hunter series) which seems to be waking up the big wigs from Sony. They are starting to offer some awesome PS3 to PSP functions that are catching the eyes of many. Remote play is still in its infancy, but you can already play PS3 games like Lair and Bionic Commando on your PSP with this function. Also the recent announcement that Sony Play TV (right now only in Europe) will allow you to record any of your favourite shows and instantly transfer them to your PSP for easy viewing anytime you want sounds awesome.Add that to the new PSP-3K coming out soon with built in mic (for Skype) and a sharper screen; things are definitely on the rise for the PSP-PS3 relationship.
4) 10 Year Life Cycle I know, the Sony heads have made some incredibly stupid and short sided comments in the past 2 years (i.e. Rumble is a thing of the past (gulp!), we believe in backwards compatibility (oops!), etc...). But one statement they seem to be sticking to is the 10 year life cycle of the PS3. The PS2 is still selling over 100k units every month and it’s been out for 8 years already, so it’s not that hard to believe that the PS3 could last a good 10 years (or more). The 360 is an awesome machine that has brought much to gaming, but already the industry is rumbling with rumours of the 720 (or the next-box, or whatever you want to call it) with dates ranging from 2010 to 2012 estimated as its launch, and we all remember what Microsoft did to the original Xbox when the 360 came out (think Old Yeller after he got rabies). The PS3 has just begun to move full steam and it has enough power to last many years before a complete new system is needed. It came out in 2006 so Sony will be supporting it until 2016 at least. That doesn’t mean the PS4 won’t come out sooner (maybe 2013 or so) but if the PS2 has shown us anything, it’s that Sony is willing to continue bring in games to the system years after the new system is out. So paying 400$ for the system today will provide you with an awesome console that will grant you hours of entertainment for at least another 8 years. That’s 50$ a year for games, movies and fun.... The price may seem high at first but it’s worth every penny. And breakdowns are few and far between soyou need not fear the evil Red Ring of Death.
3) Blu-ray It was a heck of a gamble, Sony decided to jump head first into the future and left standard DVDs behind for the all mighty Blu-ray. Placing the fate of the PS3 in the hands of their new storage device (also created by Sony) could have backfired horribly (couch!Betamax) and I really don’t know what would’ve happened if HD-DVD would have won the next-gen format war, but it didn’t. Sony won, and all PS3 owners can now benefit from it. Many of you already bought a big bad TV to satiate your movie and gaming needs, why not take full advantage of it. The PS3 is still one of the least expensive Blu-ray players on the market. Also, dual layer Blu-ray disc have about 50GB of storage space on them, compared to 8GB for regular DVDs. This has already caused a few issues for Microsoft with high profile developers from Konami (Kojima) and id Software (Carmack) stating they would either never be able to port their game to the 360 (Metal Gear Solid 4) or would have to lower the overall visual quality of the game (Rage). Games are getting bigger and bigger every year, and having a game ship on 3 or 4 disks is inconvenient and costly to developers.
2) PSN Putting aside better graphics, online connectivity seems to be the biggest jump that this generation of consoles had brought to gaming (I know, I know, the original Xbox and PS2 both had some form of online, but neither of them pierced the market the way this gen has). You will never hear me say that the PSN is better than Live, even I’m not that foolish, but Sony is offering a lot of services through the PSN. It’s free and it’s getting better with time. Online games like Warhawk and Resistance have a strong online following. Even today, years after those games were released; you can still find multiple games to join in if you an’t to play with your friends. The audio is below par, but new updates and hardware are fixing what was once an unplayable experience. Browsing the PSN store was a painful experience at launch, but the new interface released a few months back has made it quite the tool for finding new games and content. It may not have the 20,000 pieces of content that Live Marketplace has (wow! Another fish I can add to the background in Tetris Splash for 50 space bucks… cool!). But it offers a great catalogue of awesome, innovative games that you can’t find anywhere else. PixelJunk Monsters, PixelJunk Eden, Calling All Cars, Flow, Flower, Super Stardust HD, all incredible downloadable games that are exclusive to the PSN at a fraction of the cost of the big box retail games. And that’s not even bringing up the great third party downloadable games that show up on both the PSN and Live (i.e. Bionic Commando ReArmed, Mega Man 9). Hey, and even if Home turns out to be garbage, you still have access to the PSN 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Not bad for a free service
1) The Games Ok, so you’re a gamer, I get it. You don’t care about Blu-ray, you have no interest in the PSP, and you have sincere doubts that PlayStation Home will be cool (that makes two of us). You play games, you want to get home from work, kick off your shoes and sit back on your favourite couch and play some awesome games. I won’t pretend that the 360 doesn’t have any sweet exclusives. Gears of War, Halo 3, Crackdown, Mass Effect, Too Human, (you get the idea), are all awesome titles. I own a 360 Elite and I play it often, quite often actually, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore the PS3. Tons of incredible games are waiting for you to enjoy them. Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Resistance, Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank are my five favourite exclusive PS3 titles that are currently out. An airborne war game, a hack n slashes fest, a first person shooter, an action adventure game and a platformer. All very different from one another yet all great games. The next 6 months will also bring Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Infamous, all of which will make a huge splash in their own way. Plus, if you don’t already own a 360 you would now have access to all of the third-party games that have made this generation of gaming one of the best that I can remember. So there you have it, my mile long rant. If you have the money and you’re looking for a great console, no matter if you own a 360, Wii, or no current gen consoles at all, the PS will give you a lot more than it takes from you. Go ahead and give it a chance, you won’t regret it.
