The NPD group has released its monthly summary of hardware and software sales for the month of August. Both the Nintendo Wii and DS continue to sell in massive quantities in the Unites States, with each machine moving around half a million units at retail last month. While it didn't post numbers quite as impressive as the two Nintendo offerings, Sony's PSP did well in August, with about a quarter of a million sold. In fact, Sony sold more PSP units than either of its competing home consoles, the PS2 and PS3. On the software side, Madden was the big story this summer, as gamers snatched up around 2 million copies combined accross the Xbox 360, PS3, and PS2 platforms. Only one handheld title made it into the top 10: Guitar Hero: On Tour for the Nintendo DS.
Hopefully the increasing sales momentum behind the PSP will continue, and encourage Western developers to have another crack at creating quality games for the system.
