VC Review: Paper Mario

Review: Paper Mario
Virtual Console Review

Near the end of the N64's life cycle a gem was released. Paper Mario is a unique twist on RPG gaming with a graphical style that is suppose to resemble paper and great writing really set this game apart from other RPG's of the generation. This after Poke'mon was one of my first adventures into RPG's and let me say I was very happy with it.

The game story revolves around Princess Peach getting kidnapped by Bowser and Mario has to save her the basics for a Mario game. But the real story comes when you have to set out to collect all of the star spirits. The reason for this is because Bowser has picked up a magical star rod in which at the point seems to make him invincible. These star spirits are being held hostage by the bosses of the game, Let me start out buy saying play against the bosses in paper Mario were some of the best times I have ever spent gaming. You don't fight alone though you get different partners to follow you through the game. These partners can open passage ways for puzzles and fight in battle, You will have all the ones you have met up with at your side but only one at a time. To get them the game has you put into one of their story lines and you must complete it to for them to join your party.

The Graphical style has a great and unique look too it. I just love what Nintendo did with all of it. You can preform different things because of this like slip through small places because well Mario is paper and can get really then when needed. This is an RPG but not like most. You use button commands to finish your attacks which really makes you pay attention to the combat. You level up and can raise your health, magic and weapons to face bigger foes. You also learn new attacks as you go on.

The levels you explore are really different from each other and you will see some cameos from older Mario games. The game is pretty long and will keep you playing for a good time. It's an awesome deal for only $10 on the shop channel. One small thing I don't like about the game is that each part requires some back tracking and can really frustrate people but this game really makes up for it with about everything else.

This is just what the N64 needed near the end of it's life cycle and it's a must have for Wii gamers. Great story along with awesome game play and humor puts this game in my top 10 all time.

I will give Paper Mario a 9.8/10

I beat this game and It's definitly the best RPG on the 64, I really enjoyed how you can block and do double damage just by pressing the right keys at the right time. In most RPGs it's just "you have a 30% chance of blocking" but in here it's in your own hands!!!
